Roel Voorbij – Movement
Roel, has been active in theatre since he was 12 years old. Starting at the Rotterdam Youth Theatre Hofplein, he studied Theatre at the Amsterdam Theatre Academy, followed by completing the internationally recognised Amsterdam University of the Arts, Mime Education in 2005.
The projects Roel entertains are mostly developed through improvisation, created from a concept and shared philosophy with several directors. He performs all over Europe,
Morocco, New York and Australia. His most recent theatre performances has been Spectaculaire voorstelling with Theatre group Oostpool, Bianca van der Schoot and
Suzan Boogaerdt. the Milieubende directed by Moniek Merkx and Dorien Folkers and Meeuwen van Tinbergen by Cowboy bij nacht. His work with Theatre group WAK brought
him to Australia with Levelles, Loop and Nothing is really difficult. Roel directed Casadam together with Arnica Elsendoorn, an exchange project between Morocco and the
Netherlands. And won the juryprize at the FITUC (Festival Internationale Theatre Universitaire du Casablance) with his graduation solo piece ‘I Thought so’. He starred as
main character Alfred in the Golden Kalf and Tuchinski awarded movie Alfred Maassen’s last day. The movie got selected for the Cannes film festival.
As a teacher Roel is interested in the intelligence of sensitivity, proprioception, and how it empowers actors. Methods his classes are inspired on are: Laban, Bartenief,
Modern/contemporary dance, Acrobatics, Bio-mechanics, Mime corporal, Chi Kung. Improvisation, mask work, archetypes, clowning, Voice technique Briesen, Somatic
Intelligence, embodiment, Body language and Non-verbal communication.
